Why Now?
For more than four years, 20 Seconds Magazine has dedicated itself to quality long-form journalism in the arts, keeping the commitments we made when we launched the publication in January 2020. We’ve given a voice to emerging artists across the globe, published spotlights on pioneering artists left out of the history books and reported on community movements using art as a means of social and political resistance.
Since we launched 20 Seconds, a lot has happened that we didn’t expect. The Covid-19 pandemic broke out just months after Issue 1 was released, derailing more than just our plans to host a series of events to fundraise our future issues. In addition to the terror inflicted on Ukrainians, Russia’s invasion has disrupted logistics routes across the continent, increasing shipping, energy and paper prices, effectively doubling the cost to manufacture the magazine.
More About 20 Seconds Issue 7
20 Seconds Magazine intends to prove the value in articulations that move beyond what is expected of a particular artistic vehicle. Issue 7 presents a collection of work by politically motivated artists consciously conjuring new narratives and new worlds through their own medium-specific renegotiations. These are not narratives capable of healing trauma, but they are efforts to contextualize it in the face of attempts to ignore the terror that continues to dominate the present.
