20 Seconds, Once a Week: No. 6, with AndyCapp
The Canadian DJ, visual artist and curator speaks on his poster work, DJing after thirty years and '80s cult movies.
Welcome to another edition of 20 Seconds, Once a Week, on Substack. This week, Daniel Melfi speaks to Andrew “AndyCapp” Hicks, best known to 20 Seconds readers as the contributor of the essay “Music Sounds Better Without You” in Issue 1.
AndyCapp is a Canadian DJ, visual artist, curator and cultural researcher based in London, Ontario. His work explores connections between past avant-garde artistic movements and present social contexts (and their subcultures). Articulating an acute understanding of visual aesthetics and their correspondingly multilayered production characteristics, AndyCapp’s practice includes radio shows and longstanding club nights, poster design and festival direction. Melfi and AndyCapp connect Berlin and Toronto to touch on themes related to the homogeneity of a licensing-dominated present, online community radio, ‘80s cult movies and AndyCapp’s essay, “Music Sounds Better Without” (2020) from 20 Seconds Issue 1.
